Hard and durable road base using a highly rigid asphalt mixture

Overview

This is a road base material which is made using a highly rigid asphalt mixture*. Because the rigidity is much greater than that of ordinary road base, the load on the existing subbase is reduced, the asphalt pavement can be rendered more durable, and its service life can be extended.

*Developed in France in the 1990s, this mixture has been adopted in the United Kingdom and other parts of the world. It constitutes a hard, bend-resistant, and durable asphalt mixture.

*This pavement technology was developed through joint research with Nippon Expressway Research Institute Company Limited.

Features

  1. High rigidity: Thanks to its high level of stiffness, the mixture reduces the tensile strain on the underside of the asphalt layer and inhibits the occurrence of fatigue cracks.
  2. Resistance to fatigue cracking: The large amount of bitumen content in the mixture improves resistance to fatigue cracking, thereby extending its service life.
  3. Water resistance: Low porosity improves water tightness and high rigidity enhances resistance to delamination (by preventing aggregates from rubbing against each other), thereby resulting in excellent water resistance.
  4. Dynamic stability: Dynamic stability is equivalent in terms of performance to that of binder course mixtures.

Uses

  • Expressways and Heavy traffic roads
  • Roads where the bearing capacity of the asphalt treated base has declined and that have deteriorated or are undergoing deterioration
  • Roads for which highly durable pavement is to be laid down when replacing pavement
